Question: What's up with the rainbow flag on Lafayette Street with the word PACE on it? Is that some sort of newflangled gay-pride simbol?
Answer: Actually, the multichromatic banner has nothing to do with gay-pride - or Pace University, for that matter. It's the traditional symbol of Italian pacifism. (pronounced "PAH-chay", pace is Italian for peace.)
Designed 1961, well before the rainbow was adopted by friends of Dorothy, it is made a comeback ever since a certain commander in chief got us involved in an unpopular war in Iraq. -D.A.
